Bile duct cancer is a rare but highly malignant tumour that occurs in the human bile duct system and has long had a poor prognosis. Now, researchers at University College London and University College London Hospitals, in an international multi-centre trial, have identified potentially good treatments that may radically improve the lives of some patients with bile duct cancer.

The US FDA has approved pablizumab (Keytruda) as an adjuvant treatment for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer. In the trial, pablizumab (Keytruda) significantly prolonged cancer-free survival in patients compared to placebo.

For patients with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma, the CAR-T cell therapy Ide-cel resulted in a two-fold increase in the average length of time that patients' tumours did not progress compared to standard treatment, with 71% of patients experiencing substantial tumour regression and 39% experiencing complete tumour disappearance.

Results of the trial showed that patients treated with Elacestrant had a 45% reduction in the risk of disease progression or death.

The US FDA has approved a new leukaemia drug, Olutasidenib, which has been shown to be effective and has a controlled safety profile, resulting in the complete disappearance of cancer cells in 35% of patients enrolled, with efficacy lasting up to 25.9 months.

The trial is testing the effectiveness of two chemotherapy drugs, oxaliplatin and gemcitabine, in combination with radiotherapy, an approach that has been used to treat other aggressive tumours

For patients undergoing surgery for ovarian and endometrial cancer, pain and anxiety are often experienced. Recently, a new study has shown that acupressure before surgery may help reduce anxiety and that acupuncture during surgery may reduce severe pain. The study was published online in Cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society.
